Caring for our Community
Giving back to the community is part of WVUH’s values. Here are some of the ways the Hospital makes a difference in the Morgantown area:
WVU Health Expo – About 4,000 free health screenings and assessments are provided at the annual WVU Health Expo. The event, targeted to adults, is held each fall to promote the importance of prevention and early detection.
WVU Children’s Hospital Kids Fair – The WVU Children’s Hospital Kids Fair, held each spring, is targeted toward children age 12 and under (and their parents). The event uses a fun approach to teach kids about health, wellness, safety and caring for the environment. The Kids Fair is the only event of its kind in the region.
Trail Development – Walking, biking, hiking and roller-blading are just a few of the activities that take place on the local trails in the Morgantown area. Because the trails promote health and wellness, WVUH supports local trail development. In June 2009, the WVUH Trail System at Dorsey’s Knob was unveiled.
WVUH-BOPARC Partnership – In addition to trail development, the Hospital’s relationship with Morgantown’s Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners (BOPARC) has expanded in recent years in an effort to promote healthy living and enhance the quality of life in the Morgantown area. Some projects include:
- Waterfront Web & Fit Stop – Check out the kids’ playground and adult fitness stations at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park. Both are located behind the parking garage near Waterfront Place Hotel.
- Movies on the Mon – WVUH is the presenter of this family movie series each summer at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park. The outdoor movies are a community favorite.
- Sprint, Splash & Spin Triathlon – WVUH presents this mini-triathlon each August. Hundreds of local kids and adults participate in this fund-raiser for Habitat for Humanity.
- Camp Sponsor – WVUH sponsors BOPARC summer camps that promote healthy living to area kids. Many WVUH employees have been guest speakers at the camps
Walk 100 Miles in 100 Days! - Walk 100 Miles in 100 Days is our most popular program, with over 3000 employees participating! This program encourages individuals to participate on teams of 5 to 20 people. Individuals log the miles they walk each day and submit them weekly along with the rest of their team. Commemorative tee shirts are awarded to all participants who successfully reach the 100-mile goal! A grand prize is awarded to the winning team whose members all reached the 100-mile goal. Watch for details in the Winter/Spring Wellness Program Calendar and also on our website.
Charitable Giving – WVUH gives back to its community and supports other worthwhile charities. Some of the groups the Hospital supports include:
- American Cancer Society
- American Heart Association
- Camp Kno-Koma (West Virginia diabetes camp for kids)
- March of Dimes
- Milan Puskar Health Right
- Ronald McDonald House
- Special Olympics
United Way– WVUH holds a campaign for the United Way each fall. The Hospital also supports the following United Way efforts: Success by 6, Corporate Cup Challenge, Random Acts of Kindness Week, and Day of Caring.
Some Other Community Initiatives – WVUH participates in the Partners in Education program; its partner is Mylan Park Elementary. The Hospital also holds an annual 5K run/walk – the September Stride – to raise money for patients with cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary problems. WVUH partners with the Morgantown Rotary each summer to provide health screenings to the community.
